WebP is designed for efficient web delivery and is supported by current major browsers. A WebP version can reduce transfer for some photographs, especially when the JPG source uses conservative quality or oversized dimensions. Savings are not guaranteed: a carefully optimized JPG may already be competitive, and re-encoding cannot recover detail removed by the original JPG compression.
JPG input has already been encoded lossily. Lighter and Balanced apply another lossy step when producing WebP, while High quality uses lossless WebP but can only preserve the pixels decoded from the JPG. Start with the highest-quality JPG available, convert once for the intended destination and visually inspect text, edges, skin tones and gradients before replacing a production asset.
Keep Original size if another system will create responsive variants. Otherwise, limiting the longest side to 2560, 1920, 1280 or 720 pixels can reduce unnecessary transfer for a known display size. Format conversion alone does not make an image responsive: use suitable width and height attributes, srcset or an image pipeline to deliver the right dimensions to each device.

Desktop processing is on-device by default; mobile uses transient server processing by default to reduce memory pressure. Server files exist in memory only for the request and are not stored.
